This is a cast resin replica of a traditional design that's been traced to the Black Forest of Germany and Switzerland in the late 19th century. The heads would be placed on either side of a home or castle's entry door, as symbols of protection and security and, more practically, a place to hang the leashes for the house dogs. (You can just see the hook beneath the dog's head.)

Makes a nice decor item, a great conversation piece, and a wonderful gift! Fairly heavy, measures 13 in. x 9 in.
